Reach Walk

A gentle breeze and light cloud greeted 14 walkers as we gathered on the longest day of the year in ancient Reach. Christine our leader today explained how Reach had become an important inland trading port in Roman times after constructing the lode connecting Reach to the sea. Reach continued to thrive despite periods of conflict and the building of the Devil’s Dyke during the Dark Ages. King John granted a  Royal Charter to Reach giving permission to hold an annual fair now held on Fair Green each May. Our walk took us through Swaffham Prior and then through fields filled with a glorious array of wildflowers. Stopping for water breaks along the way as the temperature climbed, we headed towards the top of Devil’s Dyke walking along the ridge back towards Reach.  Thanks to Christine for leading the walk and Paul our back marker and to Christine and Rayna for providing cakes.
