It was a glorious sunny morning as 18 members made our way to The Lock Tearoom before setting off on our walk. As it was already becoming very hot despite a welcome gentle easterly breeze, we all agreed to curtail the length of our walk. Eddie our leader today took us along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation across the bridge towards Heybridge Creek. Along the way we stopped at Herrings Point viewing a wide selection of wading birds and butterflies. We enjoyed the now tranquil views of Northey Island – the scene of the Battle of Maldon in 991 AD between Vikings and Anglo Saxons. Northey Island has become an important bulwark against the ingress of the sea and a project is underway to protect the sensitive habitat. Returning along the basin path we crossed the new sea lock to the Jolly Sailor for a splendid lunch and further refreshments in the shade. Despite the change of plans everyone enjoyed the relaxed pace and frequent stops to hydrate before continuing on our way and lots of fun, laughter and chatter was had by all. Warm thanks to Carolyn, Eddie, Denis and Jacqui for all their efforts in organising our Away Day before and during and ensuring we had a safe and memorable day despite the heat.
