Nuthampstead Walk

Mist and rain had been forecast today promising a few muddy challenges for the 24 walkers gathered at the Woodman Inn, a famous haunt of World War Two American airmen. A memorial stands close by to the US 398th Bombardment Group (Heavy), their motto being “Hell from Heaven”. John, our leader this morning, managed to avoid the worst of the mud after all. The heavens were kind and the sun came out affording lovely views across the rolling countryside as we made our way past rushing streams and wooded paths where a few hellebores had started to flower. At Barkway we caught the tail end of a local football match as we stopped for our coffee break before turning back to the Woodman. Thanks to John and to Claire our back marker.
