It was a lovely sunny morning though a tad fresh as 25 of us gathered outside the Maids Head in Wicken. Carolyn our leader today gave us a brief history of the village. Our route would take us through Wicken Nature Reserve and past the still working twelve sided smock windmill – the last survivor of its kind in England. Just before 11 am we paused our walk amidst the tranquility of the Fens to join the Nation’s two minute silence for Remembrance Sunday. We continued our walk along Burwell Lode, Adventurers’ Fen and Wicken Fen Reserve back to Wicken village. We were fortunate to enjoy a lovely view of the growing herd of rare “Grullo” (tan-grey) coloured Konik Ponies reintroduced in 2001 as part of a grazing project in these Fens. Thanks to Carolyn and our back marker Jacqui for an enjoyable walk and for arranging lunch.
